Winter is here, and it promises to be one of the worst. All that ice, snow, and cold temperature make life extremely challenging for all concerned. The challenge is doubled for seniors. Here are some winter safety tips for seniors to adhere to.
Avoid Slipping on Ice
The roads can be snowy and icy. This can cause many dangerous falls and injuries. Falls, unfortunately, is quite common with seniors during the winter months. Most of these falls result in fractures and lacerations. If you wish to avoid slipping on ice, this winter, make sure to wear shoes with good traction and non-skid soles. Stay indoors as much as possible till roads are clear, and take off your shoes the moment you walk indoors, as mud and water brought from outdoors can track in the house and result in slipping.
Dress Warmly
We don’t have to tell you this, but we will stress it. Frostbite and hypothermia are common among seniors. Don’t let your thermostat go down a lot. Dress in layers even when you are indoors. Wear warm socks, a heavy coat and hat, gloves, and a scarf when going outside, even for a few minutes. Remember to cover any exposed area of skin, and use a scarf to cover your mouth.
Check your Transportation
Driving during winter can be dangerous for everyone. It can be doubly so for you. Most elderly people may not drive as often and may have slow reflexes. Getting your mode of transport checked through a garage will help you avoid any accidents. Have someone check the oil, brakes, wipers, and battery. Change your tires. Be extra careful when driving.
Be Prepared for Power Outages
Power outages are common during winter due to winter storms. Keep flashlights and warm blankets handy and easily accessible. You really don’t want to be fumbling about in the dark looking for flashlights when there is a power outage. This can lead to a fall or injuries. If there is no power, remember to dress warmly and have a supply of non-perishable foods in your cupboards.
Being unprepared for winter can lead to many accidents. An accident can cause a loss of independence. So, adhere to these winter safety tips and stay independent and enjoy this winter doing what you like to do, but doing it carefully.
