5 Simple Ways to Get Back Into Exercise

Have you taken a break from working out?

Maybe seasonal weather has kept you from getting outside, or you haven’t found an at-home workout you like. No matter the reason, now is the perfect time to get your body moving again.

Staying active is an essential part of maintaining your overall health. Just remember to stretch, warm up and cool down to prevent injury.

Here are five tips to help you get back into exercise.

1. Take it slow. 

Start with daily walks or low-intensity workouts such as swimming, biking or gentle chair yoga. If a longer session feels overwhelming, set your timer for five to 10 minutes just to get moving again.

2. Schedule your exercise. 

It’s easier to finish your workout when it’s part of your routine. You can start by going for a walk at the end of your day or taking a midday break to do some light stretching.

3. Find movement you enjoy. 

Do you usually put off exercising? Experiment until you find something you like or try working out with a friend to make the time more fun. Together, you can share an online yoga practice or take a socially distanced walk.

4. Set realistic goals. 

Early success is important to keep you motivated — but remember to be patient with yourself. Can you commit to three short workouts this week? If so, that’s a great place to start.

5. Reflect on your progress. 

How does exercise make you feel? Jot down a few adjectives on a piece of paper and keep it in sight. Reflection helps you remember the benefits you get from movement so you’re encouraged to keep going.
