Retirement – Home and community preferences

by Carla Griffin on October 29, 2012

Though Baby Boomers and recent retirees are active and intend to stay that way for awhile, they are proactive in looking for features that will make their lives more convenient, comfortable and easy, both now and in their later years.

Important considerations in choosing a community:

  • Proximity to current employment
  • Access to part-time employment
  • A community with quality design
  • High quality health care facilities nearby
  • Good access to transit to forgo driving at some point
  • Recreational areas like parks with walking and biking trails
  • Nearby shops and restaurants

Important considerations in choosing a home:

  • Services that will free up time, like housekeeping and maintenance inside and outside the home
  • One-floor living
  • Universal design features like flush thresholds, wide doorways, bigger bathrooms, and grab bars
  • High-speed Internet
  • Security system
  • Energy-efficient appliances and systems
  • In general luxury on a small scale
